Malleefowl — The most unlikely of birds
A documentary film
There is nothing ordinary about malleefowl.
Rarely seen or heard, their enigmatic lives unfold in some of Australia's most unforgiving landscapes. They neither sit on their eggs, nor raise their chicks. Instead they build a giant mound out of sand from which their young will emerge.
They truly are the most unlikely of birds.
For countless generations they have shaped the mallee dunes, performing the cycle of mound-building, egg-laying, and birth under a harsh outback sun. But the world around them is changing quickly, and the smoke of devastating wildfires fills the mallee sky.
Now it is up to those who love malleefowl to discover the bird's secrets; to connect their dwindling populations across fragmented lands; and to help ensure the ancient cycle of this extraordinary bird continues.
Malleefowl — the most unlikely of birds brings you into the world of these incredible animals, and tells the tale of the conservationists and scientists working to save them from an uncertain future. Produced in partnership with nature connection charity Remember The Wild.

Why we're telling this story
Malleefowl are tough birds surviving in conditions that would make even the most experienced explorer nervous. But despite their toughness their numbers have declined dramatically since European colonisation.
The cumulative threats of habitat destruction, introduced predators, and climate change paint a dire future for malleefowl. The National Malleefowl Recovery Group is working diligently to address these challenges and ensure malleefowl stand the best chance of surviving into the future.
Conserving malleefowl relies on the passion of volunteers who want to see these birds thrive. Getting involved is simple, fun, and makes a real difference. By joining our community you can help conserve malleefowl and the places they call home.
