About this camera

The National Malleefowl Recovery Group (NMRG) is excited to partner with Explore the Mallee to bring you our Malleefowl Live Mound Camera for its third consecutive year.

This year marks an exciting milestone, with the camera installed for the first time at an active Malleefowl mound on a property managed by Explore the Mallee in Victoria.

The live camera offers a rare opportunity to observe these remarkable and threatened birds in their natural habitat, providing an intimate glimpse into their extraordinary breeding behaviour, mound maintenance and daily activities.

Unlike most birds, Malleefowl do not sit on their eggs to incubate them. Instead, they construct large mounds of sand and organic material, carefully regulating the temperature using heat generated by decomposing vegetation and the warmth of the sun.

Through this collaboration, we hope to inspire greater appreciation and understanding of Malleefowl while highlighting the importance of protecting their unique mallee habitat.

Tune in, watch nature unfold and join us in celebrating one of Australia's most extraordinary birds!
